Living on the edge: the Queensland clubs deciding their season by a single goal
Some seasons are built on big wins. Others are shaped by one late clearance, one missed chance or one goal either way. Across NPL Queensland and FQPL 1–6, four teams have already played 11 matches decided by exactly one goal.

THE IDEA
How much of a season can really come down to one goal?
League tables eventually turn into clean columns of wins, draws, losses and points. The matches underneath them are rarely that tidy. A team can sit comfortably in the top half while repeatedly surviving one-goal games, or spend months near the bottom after losing the same type of match by the smallest possible margin.
The Low Block looked across the supplied 2026 results from NPL Queensland and FQPL 1 through FQPL 6 and isolated every match won or lost by exactly one goal. The aim was not simply to find the tightest teams, but to see who keeps ending up in those situations — and who is actually coming out on the right side of them.
The results create two very different stories. Souths United and Willowburn have spent huge chunks of their seasons on a knife-edge. Brisbane Strikers and Pine Rivers have been far more efficient when games get that tight. Brisbane Roar B, meanwhile, show how brutally the same margins can work in the other direction.

What does a strong close-game record actually mean?
It can point toward composure, defensive organisation, game management or simply having players capable of producing the decisive moment. But one-goal results also contain a lot of variance. A deflection, a missed penalty or one late chance can change the record quickly. The numbers show who has been successful in tight games; they do not prove why.

North Star recorded five wins in the analysed data. Every single one was by exactly one goal. Their overall one-goal record sits at 5–6, meaning the difference between a positive and negative close-game season is literally one result.
There is no comfortable-win cushion hiding underneath the total. Every time North Star banked three points, the match was still alive by the smallest possible margin.

Grange Thistle's four defeats in the analysed results all came by exactly one goal. Their overall close-game record was 5–4.
That changes the feel of those losses. The defeats still cost points, but none came with an opponent pulling away. Every loss remained within one goal — a useful reminder that the ladder does not show how close a team was to changing the result.

THE DIFFERENCE AT THE TOP
Strikers keep finding the extra goal
Brisbane Strikers have seven one-goal wins and only one one-goal loss. Their only defeat in the analysed results was also by a single goal, while they repeatedly turned the same type of tight match into three points.
That does not automatically make them objectively more "clutch" than everyone else. But across a season, repeatedly converting 50–50-looking scorelines into wins is enormously valuable. Seven one-goal victories are worth 21 points; flip even a few of those results and the shape of a strong season can change quickly.
Pine Rivers have produced the same 7–1 record in FQPL 5. Souths United also have seven one-goal wins, but their 7–4 record reflects far more time spent on both sides of the margin.

ONE-GOAL LOSSES
Brisbane Roar B recorded the most one-goal defeats in the analysis. Their close-game record was 2–7. That is the clearest contrast with Brisbane Strikers and Pine Rivers: similar types of matches, radically different returns.

Both Broadbeach defeats in the analysed period were by one goal.
Lions FC
Every Lions defeat in the analysed data came by the smallest possible margin.
THE 55% SEASON
More than half a campaign on a knife-edge
Willowburn's 11 one-goal matches represent approximately 55% of their games, the highest proportion identified in the analysis. Their record in those matches is almost perfectly balanced at 6 wins and 5 losses.
That makes Willowburn one of the best examples of how unstable a season can feel from week to week. More than half the time, one additional goal for either side would have changed the nature of the result completely.
It is not simply a story of winning or losing tight games. It is the sheer frequency of them. Few teams have lived closer to the line between three points, zero points and a completely different league position.

WHAT THE TABLE DOESN'T SHOW
One goal here or there can rewrite an entire season
One-goal results are not a perfect measure of quality. A strong team can dominate a match and still win 1–0. A struggling team can be second-best and lose 2–1. Match state, finishing, defensive errors, substitutions, game management and plain luck can all sit behind the same final margin.
But repeated patterns still tell us something useful. Souths United have been dragged into 11 tight finishes and won seven. Pine Rivers and Brisbane Strikers have converted seven of eight one-goal games into victories. North Star have not recorded a comfortable win in the analysed data. Grange Thistle have not suffered a comfortable defeat.
Then there is Willowburn, where more than half the season has been decided by a single goal. At that point, fine margins stop feeling like an occasional football cliché and start becoming the defining shape of the campaign.

League tables look definitive. The matches underneath them often are not.
Change only a handful of these one-goal results and large parts of the Queensland football pyramid could look very different. That is the reality of a season lived on the edge.
