The Biggest Clubs in NPL Queensland
Queensland’s top state league contains national-era giants, cultural institutions, modern trophy machines and some of the strongest development clubs in the country. Using history, accomplishments, size, player pathways and current relevance, we ranked the five biggest independent clubs competing in the 2026 NPL Queensland Men.
Brisbane Roar B is excluded because it is the reserve and development side of an A-League club rather than an independent NPL organisation.

Queensland’s deepest trophy cabinet gives City the edge
Brisbane City take first place because no current independent NPL club can match their complete body of work. Formed as Gli Azzurri in 1952, City climbed from the fourth division to become one of the defining clubs of Queensland’s state and national eras.
Their official history lists 13 league titles, 13 Grand Final victories, 12 Queensland Cups and two national cups. The biggest achievements came in 1977 and 1978, when City won consecutive Philips Cups while competing in the National Soccer League.
Spencer Park adds another layer to the club’s scale. City secured the site in 1963, later opened a major grandstand and headquarters, and have continued investing in facilities and junior development. The club’s academy profile, national history and unmatched volume of senior honours make them the most complete candidate.

Lions combine national history with unmatched NPL dominance
Lions FC were founded by Dutch immigrants as Hollandia in 1957. The club became a foundation member of the National Soccer League and lifted the NSL Cup in 1981, immediately giving it a place among Queensland’s most significant football institutions.
What separates Lions from nearly every other historic club is that the success never became purely nostalgic. Their men’s program lists three NPL Premierships, five NPL Championships, two Kappa Pro Series titles and one Kappa Queensland Cup. They entered 2026 as the reigning NPL Champions.
Lions are also enormous away from the senior pitch. The club reports more than 90 teams and 1,000 active participants, supported by academy, MiniRoos, masters and women’s programs. Brisbane City narrowly win the historical argument, but Lions are the strongest all-round football organisation in the present-day NPL.

Olympic built a top-level club from Division Eight
Olympic were established as Pan Rhodian FC in 1967 by Brisbane’s Greek community. The club began with one team in Division Eight and climbed through the entire local structure before reaching Division One in 1979.
Goodwin Park became Olympic’s permanent home in the early 1980s, helping create one of the NPL’s most recognisable venues and supporter environments. The club then wrote itself into the modern competition’s history by winning both the inaugural NPL Queensland Premiership and Championship in 2013.
Olympic have remained a major finals and cup presence since that breakthrough. Their combination of cultural identity, a large football program, a strong academy and sustained top-level relevance keeps them clearly inside the top three.

The Knights have compressed decades of success into a few seasons
Gold Coast Knights were formed by Croatian migrants in 1978 as St Anthony’s Soccer Club. The club grew alongside the Croatian-Australian community and established a permanent home at Carrara.
Since entering the NPL in 2019, the Knights have produced one of the most successful runs in competition history. Their senior men won Championships in 2019, 2022 and 2023, alongside back-to-back Premierships in 2023 and 2024.
The 2023 season was the defining statement. Gold Coast Knights became the first NPL Queensland men’s side to complete the Premiership, Championship and Kappa Pro Series treble. The club also reports 450 players, 750 members and major growth since 2020. Their history is shorter than the top three, but their current scale and silverware are impossible to ignore.

A merged identity with immediate national ambition
Moreton City Excelsior bring together the histories of Albany Creek Excelsior, established in 1963, and Moreton Bay United, an inaugural NPL Queensland club formed for the competition’s launch in 2013. The two organisations formally united in 2023.
Moreton Bay United won the NPL Premiership-Championship double in 2015. Under the Moreton City Excelsior name, the club became NPL Queensland Premiers in 2025 and earned entry into the inaugural Australian Championship, placing the organisation on a national stage.
Moreton sit behind the Knights because the merged identity is still building its own long-term story. However, its regional reach, academy infrastructure, senior depth and repeated NPL success give it the strongest claim to fifth place.

Eastern Suburbs
Formed in 1922, Easts are one of Queensland’s oldest established clubs and remain a major academy and community organisation. Their extraordinary longevity almost carried them into fifth.
Peninsula Power
Back-to-back NPL Premierships in 2020 and 2021 established Power as a modern force. Their senior record is excellent, but they lack the national-era history of the clubs above them.
Gold Coast United
The name carries A-League recognition and the current organisation has built an influential academy. Interrupted history and limited senior NPL silverware keep United outside the five.
Final Verdict
Brisbane City narrowly remain the biggest club in NPL Queensland
Lions FC have the strongest argument against them. Lions are larger in the modern competition, have won more NPL Championships and remain the present-day benchmark. City stay first because two national cups, decades of state dominance and the scale of their total honours are impossible to move past.
Olympic represent history and identity. Gold Coast Knights represent modern dominance. Moreton City Excelsior represent regional scale and national ambition. Together, the five show that there is no single way to become a major Queensland football club.
